MT. PLEASANT — Vikan Luong has the coolest house on the block. Well, his birds do - he built a 26-perch bird house, weighing over 100 pounds, for his front yard, on the corner of South Jackson and North Warren in Mt. Pleasant.

Luong said he built one last year, but after the bad storm, it got knocked over and destroyed, so he decided to try again. When he decided to build the birdhouse, he did not draw up any plans or blueprints, he just went forward with an idea he had in his head.

“Pretty much everything is in my head. I just use my imagination to think, ‘Oh I need this or I need that,’” he said. Luong said his weakness throughout the project has been Hobby Lobby, because he is constantly going in and looking for inspiration or ideas, and coming out with them as well.

The decision to start building birdhouses was not something he had a plan for either. Previous to building his first one, he had no experience.

“Just one day I decided I wanted to, and I just find it fascinating. Especially I love the cabin theme and the country style. I’m kind of old school,” he said with a laugh.

The 26-perch log cabin style mansion is complete with park benches, foliage, an American flag and solar lights.

The most time-consuming part, he said, is cutting the little details, such as the door and window frames, for the house. The panels for the exterior and shingles for the roof. He cut each piece by hand himself and it only took him two weeks to do it.

Now that this project is done, he’s already thinking up his next project, which he thinks will be a castle. As for a time frame, he said he is unsure because he likes to do things spur of the moment and whenever he has time. It may seem like a lot of work, building a house for 26, but Luong said it’s work he enjoys.

“You never work a day in your life if you’re having fun,” he said.
