Cardinal football opens early in 2019

Comets play at Columbus in Week 0, host North Mahaska for homecoming

ELDON — Cardinal football fans won’t have to wait quite as long as the rest of the state for football season in 2019. The Comets are one of just a handful of Class A playing in “Week 0” this year.

The Comets are coming off a 4-5 year in 2018. They started the year red-hot, going 4-0, but dropped their final five games of the season. They’ll be entering the new season without three-year starting quarterback Trey Albert, who graduated this spring.

Cardinal will hit the road for their first game of the year, taking on another area team, Columbus, in the season opener on Aug. 23. That game will be Cardinal’s only game against Class 1A competition this season.

The Comets will host Van Buren in their first home game of the year on Aug. 30, one year after shutting the Warriors out 26-0.

Cardinal will then play two of the teams it beat in 2018. The Comets will play Wayne on the road on Sept. 6, and then after their bye week, they’ll return to Eldon for their homecoming game against North Mahaska. They put up 40 points against both of those teams in their wins in 2018.

After Cardinal’s homecoming game, the Comets will turn their attention towards the distirct schedule. They’ll open up in Packwood to take on Pekin, a team that handed them their first loss of the year in 2018.

Cardinal will then return home for their first two games in October, one against defending district co-champion Durant, and one against Belle Plaine.

The Comets will hit the road in Week 7 to play Highland. One week later, they’ll host another defending district co-champion in Brooklyn-Guernsey-Malcom for their final game of the regular season.
