Altruism at your library

By Bryna Walker, Library Director

Recently, we had two men who came into the library and offered to help us with shelving in the children’s reading area. They knew we needed to have some shelves leveled and extra wood added so our spines of the books could face out and it would be more organized for parents and children looking for a book. By the next day the two men had cut, stained, and installed two of the shelves. By the next day, the rest of the shelves were done. It is hard to know how to thank someone for doing something like that. They said they enjoyed it and wanted to help us at the library and it was their way of doing it. I thought, “what a selfless act of kindness.”

Whether it is a monetary donation for books, food for kids that are here after school, or donating a skill, such as carpentry, to help make our library look nice; altruism is something that truly makes the world a happier place. Thank you to those people who give back to our library. In celebrating National Library Week we are reminded that Libraries=Strong Communities. We look forward every day in helping our library patrons and we want to thank you for your support and patronage at Washington Public Library.
