Women 4 Women is hosting their third-annual fundraiser for women battling cancer with golf and bridge tournaments, a silent auction and other table games.

The fundraiser is being held at the Mt. Pleasant Golf & Country Club on Tuesday, July 16, with happy hour and bridge beginning at 4:30 p.m. and golf and games beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Although the deadline to sign up to attend the fundraiser has passed, anyone is welcome to participate in the silent auction, which is on display at the Mt. Pleasant Golf & Country Club until the fundraiser on July 16.

Money raised by Women 4 Women has helped women purchase new wardrobes needed as their bodies change from cancer treatments, buy cellphones to communicate with their family as they undergo cancer treatments, get gas and groceries and purchase wigs.

Last year, Women 4 Women doubled the amount of money they raised the previous year, bringing in a whopping $8,184 during their event in 2018. Katie Mertens, president of the Women’s Association, hopes to bring in at least that much this year as Women 4 Women becomes more widely known.

Karla Lance, who founded Women 4 Women and died in November 2018, created the organization to directly help women who are battling cancer.

“So many people I know have been affected by cancer,” Lance said to The News following the Women 4 Women fundraiser in 2018. “When you get cancer, insurance doesn’t cover everything. You still have to buy groceries.”

Mertens said that this year’s event will honor Lance’s memory with a special game.

“Karla has a way of pulling you into things,” Mertens said. “We really miss her.”

Mertens met Lance when they were both raising children. In fact, Lance was Merten’s son’s first-grade teacher. Before school, Lance and Mertens would take a morning walk together.

“She was a fun gal,” Mertens said. “She golfed to have fun. She didn’t golf to get a good score.”

Up to 27 teams will compete during Women 4 Women’s two-woman, 9-hole best shot golf tournament during the fundraiser. Area businesses will be sponsoring the golf course for $25 each.

For women not interested in golfing, bridge or table games, they were able to reserve a bar stool that will be decorated with their name during the event and enjoy an evening with friends.

Participation in any of the above activities is $30 a person. All proceeds to Women 4 Women goes to local HCI Care Services, Help to Others (H2O), the Henry County Health Center Infusion Department and women who are battling cancer.

Mertens said that Help to Others (H2O) assisted 22 women in Henry County with cancer this past year thanks to Women 4 Women funding.
