KEOSAQUA — Of all the local football teams getting ready for action, nobody has a more travel-centric beginning of the season than Van Buren. The Warriors will be packing the buses a lot in the first month of the schedule, playing four of their first five games on the road.
Vab Buren is coming off a 1-8 record last season, going 1-4 in district play.
The Warriors, a member of Class 1A District 5, will open their season with a couple of out-of class road games. Van Buren will play at Class A’s Cardinal in Week 1, and Class 2A’s Louisa-Muscatine in Week 2. The Warrior offense had a rough time against both of those teams last season, falling 26-0 and 41-6, respectively.
Van Buren will host an early homecoming in Week 3, when they host Class 2A’s Davis County on Sept. 13.
The Warriors will be looking to punch back at the Mustangs at homecoming. Davis County won last season’s game 42-0.
Van Buren will be back on the road in their next two games. They’ll head west to play Wayne County in Week 4, and then go northeast to face Columbus in Week 5.
The Warriors’ game against Columbus will be their first district contest of the season. They defeated the Wildcats 24-6 in last year’s game, for their only win of the year.
Van Buren will play three of their last four games at home. They’ll host Sigourney-Keota and Wapello in their first two games in October, hit the road for Mediapolis in the second-to-last game of the year and wrap up the schedule with defending district champion Wilton on senior night.
