Carole Susanne Peet, 62, died Saturday, Oct. 23, 2021,
at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. Born Dec. 21, 1958, in Fort Belvoir, Va., she was the daughter of Roger and Susie Stevens. Carole married Steven Peet in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in 1986. They later divorced.
Carole graduated from Burlington Community High School in 1977. She played clarinet in the high school band. She attended SCC in West Burlington, graduating in 1979. She then transferred to Iowa State University, graduating from there. In 1982, with a B.S. in food technology (microbiology).
Immediately after college, Carole worked for Cargill International, first in Cedar Rapids and later in Memphis, Tenn., in the corn milling division, finally transferring to Blaire, Neb., where she worked through retirement in 2014. She was involved with the monitoring, testing, adjusting and the overall safety of the chemistry of processing corn into high fructose sweeteners. During her tenure, she traveled to numerous U.S. Cargill corn milling plants to audit the safety standards and assist with any issues in their labs. Carole even had international assignments to Turkey in 1999 and a year or so later to Poland to assist in startup of new corn milling plant laboratories in those lands. Carole had had a long-term goal to retire early at 55 and to travel. She did retire at 55, however due to declining health.
Carole enjoyed playing clarinet in the Omaha Metro Municipal Band and creating ceramic figurines. She attended Christ is Lord Church in Omaha and was active in Bible study and women's groups. In 2020, Carole moved to Mount Pleasant, Iowa, to be closer to her family. She joined Faith Christian Outreach Church and attended Bible study and women's prayer groups there. Carole enjoyed meals with family and friends and music. She had owned and loved several special dogs over the years.
Survivors include two brothers, Rex Stevens and Tom Stevens of Burlington, Iowa; one sister, Sharon (Dennis) Detrick of Mount Pleasant, Iowa; one sister-in-law, Donna Wallentine of Galva, Ill.; one aunt, Dorothy Nixon of Burlington, Iowa; four nieces, Amber Fordham of Denmark, Iowa, Natalie Cabrera of Mount Pleasant, Iowa, Brittany Noble of New London, Iowa, and Tina Crawford of Urbana, Ill.; two nephews, Michael Box of Mount Pleasant, Iowa, and Zachary (Ashley) Box of Burlington, Iowa; and numerous cousins, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Carole was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, David Wallentine; one sister, Doris Crawford; one sister-in-law, Kelli Stevens; and one niece, Jennifer Box. In addition, fur babies Bruiser and Dollie.
The funeral service for Carole will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 28, at Faith Christian Outreach Center in Mount Pleasant. Pastor Monte Knudsen will officiate. Interment will be in Bonaparte Cemetery, Bonaparte. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 27, at Lunning Chapel, where the family will receive friends.
