Many Americans are still wondering what to do if they have COVID-19 symptoms. They don’t know when to get tested, of even if they should test. According to CDC guidance, COVID symptoms can appear anywhere from two to 14 days after someone has been exposed to the virus.
Anyone exhibiting symptoms should get tested for COVID. An infected person can spread COVID starting two days before the person has any symptoms of even tests positive. Even then, people who have COVID don’t always have obvious symptoms. And a person still is considered a close contact, even if they were wearing a mask while they were around someone with COVID.
The Henry County Public Health does not do testing on site, nor do they have rapid tests available. The HCPH does have free saliva PCR self-tests for pick up. The tests, once used, are sent via UPS. You will need internet access and an email address to register and receive your results. Tests are available during business hours. Please call ahead if you are sick or have been exposed. Contact 319-385-0779 for tests.
If you have been exposed to COVID, it is recommended that you wait five days after possible exposure to get tested unless you develop symptoms.
Walk-ins for the COVD vaccine (Moderna, Pfizer, and J&J) will be accepted at HCPH on the following days and times: Wednesdays from 1-3:30 p.m., Thursdays from 9 a.m.,-3:30 p.m. And on the first and third Thursdays from 9 a.m.-5:30 p.m. This schedule is for January and February only.
Flu shots also will be provided during these walk-in clinics for $35, unless insurance can be billed.
It is known that most people who have the coronavirus disease recover completely within a few weeks. The long term effects may be the lasting outcome of the disease. Some people, even those who experienced mild versions of the disease, may continue to experience symptoms even after their initial recovery.
Most know, by know, that older people and those experiencing serious medical conditions, are the most likely to experience lingering COVID symptoms. However, even young, otherwise healthy individuals can feel COVID long symptoms for months after infection.
Many long-COVID facts are still unidentified. It still is unknown about how COVID will affect people over time. Potentially long-lasting problems from COVID make it even more important to reduce the spread of the disease.
