On to the next play. On to the next game.
That is the philosophy Washington head coach James Harris has after the Demons lost a Class 3A District 6 game Friday at third-ranked Solon.
How does a team recover from a loss that saw the Demons down 37-0 at halftime?
'Wash it,” Harris said. 'It is obviously not what we wanted to happen, but our only choice is to assess weakness, learn from it, and move forward.”
Washington hosts Fort Madison Friday.
The Bloodhounds, who have a 2-4 record, lost to Fairfield 42-14 last week and 49-6 to Solon the previous week.
Their quarterback, Lennon Barker, leads the district in pass attempts (177), completions (96) and yards (1,106). He is third in Class 3A in attempts.
'They throw the ball a lot,” Harris said. 'No. 13 (6-foot-1, 185-pound senior Dominic Frantz) and No. 2 (6-2, 175 senior Shaymour Redd-Donald) are good wide receivers.”
No. 1 is Michael Mosena, who is second in the district with 24 receptions.
Fort Madison coach Tony Shiffman plays a spread offense.
'We need to be smart with the football and get the Demon offense off of the field while sustaining our own offensive drives,” he said. 'We need to play mistake-free football and give our skill players time to get yardage on offense.”
The Bloodhounds have passed 186 times and handed it off 92 times. Kali Maestro has 187 yards rushing on 50 attempts, but Diego Lozano has 177 yards on just 19 carries.
Lozano leads the Fort Madison defense, which has recorded 11 turnovers, with 48.5 tackles, including 11 for loss and three sacks.
'To be successful, we need to play a physical, penalty-free game and get on the plus of the turnover margin,” Harris said. 'We need to take care of the football to start. We can not have turnovers like we did last week.”
The Demons will face an odd-front defense with a 4-2-5 base alignment.
'We need to play our top game and capitalize on any mistakes that Washington may make,” Shiffman said.
The Bloodhounds must find answers for Luke Turner, who is second in the district's quarterback rating at 145.4. He is third in yards (958 on 60 for 118 passing) and second in touchdowns with 11.
Cade Hennigan is Turner's favorite target with 19 receptions (tied for fifth in the district) for 312 yards (third) and six touchdowns, which is first in the district and tied for fifth in Class 3A.
'Washington has a strong defense and quick-hitting offense,” Shiffman said.
Turner is fourth in the district in rushing yards with 396 on 90 carries. Tristin Westphal-Edwards is eighth in the district with 255 yards on 68 carries.
