Windfield, Olds, Mt. Pleasant, Wayland, Brighton and Lockridge fire departments were called out at 9 p.m., to a fire on 1099 Merrimac Road in Wayland. The Wayland Fire Department arrived first on the scene.
“We were called out to a hog unit on fire,” said Wayland Fire Chief Matt Leichty. “We arrived with one unit on the ground when we got there, we could not get it contained to the first building and it spread to a second, adjoining building at that time.”
“Both building were destroyed,” said Leichty. “We were able to keep the fire contained and kept it from destroying a third building.”
The damage was contained to two buildings, all hogs and equipment. “I do not have a number of how many animals were lost,” said Leichty. “Two sow barns were engulfed and completely destroyed.”
There is no word, as of yet, as to what caused the fire at the Eichelberger Farms buildings.
