Janet was born May 13, 1936, in Iowa City, Iowa, the daughter of William and Mildred (Paul) Shalla. The family moved west of Washington when Janet was 2 years old. She attended Grant Country School and graduated from Washington High School in 1954. Janet was united in marriage to Leroy Bain on October 9, 1954, at the United Presbyterian Church in Washington.
Janet and Leroy lived in Lewes, Delaware, until Leroy was assigned to an Aircraft Carrier at which time Janet moved back to Washington. She worked at the Washington County Treasurer’s office. They lived in Washington for seven years and in Iowa City for over 50 years. Janet was a homemaker until her children were grown and then she worked at the Children’s Hospital and the University of Iowa Hospital. She and Leroy traveled to 49 states and after retirement they spent most winters in Texas. She enjoyed reading, sewing, line dancing, going to flea markets and garage sales, taking pictures and sharing them with friends and family. Janet also enjoyed scrapbooking and putting together photo albums. She enjoyed supplying her grandchildren with books suited for their ages. The love of her life was her family and spending time with them. She belonged to the First Presbyterian Church, the Moose Lodge, and the Sew and Blow Neighborhood Club.
She is survived by her husband, Leroy Bain of Littleton, Colorado; son, Ronald (Belinda) Bain of California; son, Roger Bain of New Mexico; daughter, Susan Whatley of Colorado; and seven grandchildren: Dillon, Brianna, Jared, Valerie, Jordan, Taylor and Ella.
