Lawrence "Larry" Pencil, 86, of Birmingham, passed away Friday, Dec. 17, 2021, at his home.

Per his request, there will not be any services. Memorials may be made to the McCreery Cancer Center and mailed to Dixie Pencil, 531 West Cedar Street, Birmingham, IA 52535 or Marlon and Deb Wolver, P.O. Box 103, Birmingham, IA 52535.

Larry was born July 21, 1935, in Richland, to Oscar and Velma (Woods) Pencil. He married Caroline Marie Leyden on Feb. 5, 1955. They celebrated 60 years of marriage before she passed away July 7, 2015.

Larry served in the Army National Guard during the Korean and Vietnam wars. He was a truck driver for 35-plus years and volunteer fireman in Birmingham for many years. Larry enjoyed watching John Wayne movies or any other westerns on TV. He collected Cadillac cars and, in the earlier days, enjoyed riding motorcycles. Most important was spending time with family and friends.

Larry will be missed by his three children, Charles (Olwen) Pencil of Sonoma, Calif., and Dixie Pencil and Debra (Marlon) Wolver, both of Birmingham; grandchildren, Mikael (River) Griffin, Amber (Jim) Meixner, Dylan Pencil, Katherin Pencil and Samantha Pencil; four great-grandchildren, Madison and Bryan Meixner and Austin and Jerrod Griffin; and one brother, Keith (Mary) Pencil of Libertyville, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar and Velma; wife, Caroline; and sister, Lucille.
