Home / Mt. Pleasant schools explores child care agreement
The Mt. Pleasant Board of Education is considering contracting with the Mount Pleasant Childcare Center for an in-house, after-school child care program.
At a meeting of the school board’s Site Committee on June 3, board members spoke with the child care center’s director, Amy McLaughlin, about the potential for a program that offers child care to students from the end of the school day to 5:30 p.m.
Board member Angie Blint said the community has a need for after-school child care, and the current facility of the day care center does not have the space to care for students from Mt. Pleasant schools.
“Their current facility isn’t going to have space for too much additional day care after school, so they’re looking to hopefully bridge a gap that the community needs,” Blint said.
If agreed upon, the school would lease space to the child care center, which the center would staff to care for students between the time school gets out and their parents get off work.
The Mount Pleasant Childcare Center has the capacity to care for 68 children, focusing on infants and toddlers, McLaughlin said. Located at 304 W. Washington St., the center will open on July 6.
McLaughlin said having a space in the school will allow the center to care for children who need it that the current facility can’t accommodate.
“Providing a child care center for babies and toddlers and infants is helpful, but there also needs to be a place for the kids in school who aren’t old enough to stay by themselves, whose parents don’t get off work at 3 o’clock,” she said.
McLaughlin said she has heard from parents who want to see an after-school child care program in Mt. Pleasant. Blint said some students attend in-home day cares after school but having an option in a Mt. Pleasant school would be beneficial.
No agreement to lease space in the school has been made yet, but McLaughlin said she’s hoping to begin offering services in early September if it is finalized. Before the decision is finalized, a lease agreement would have to be voted on by the whole board.
