New dog park opens at East Lake Park

The new dog park at East Lake Park in Mt. Pleasant is open for use.

The park still is under development, but community members may begin using the park.

Dog owners are excited that there is now a designated area for their dogs.

“I think it’s great,” dog owner Heather Rich said. “It’s nice to have a space to take your dogs and play instead of just walking around town. It’s also great because the dogs can roam free.”

The park is 350 feet by 200 feet, and it includes sections for large and small dogs.

The plan received a boost when the city was awarded a $19,000 donation, which jump-started the project.

A $9,000 grant from the Henry County Community Foundation and around $20,000 from the park escrow fund covered the rest of the costs.

Although Rich enjoys the park, she hopes that upgrades will be added.

“While I think the park is great as of right now, I hope they will add an obstacle course or something of that sort for them to run through.”
