MT. PLEASANT - The Iowa Wesleyan women's basketball team had another nice start on Wednesday night against Greenville University, but a third-quarter run for the Panthers was too much. The Tigers fell in their final home game, 71-63.
Nine quick points from Morgan McCrea helped the Tigers jump out to a 19-14 lead after one quarter. Greenville began to scrap back in the second, but the Tigers went into halftime with a 36-34 advantage.
Iowa Wesleyan's lead didn't last long once the third period started. Greenville's Abigail Reinneck hit a 3-pointer 15 seconds into the second half and the Tigers never led again.
McCrea ended the night with a team-leading 19 points, going 7-for-14 from the field and 5-for-8 from 3-point land. Anija Simmons had a double-double, going for 12 points and 11 rebounds.
Hannah Sykora finished the game with 10 points and four steals. Asantee Tillman had nine points. Sydney Farrar and Taylor Wiatrak scored five points apiece, and Chris Heimann scored three.
The Iowa Wesleyan men's team was originally set to play Greenville as part of the second half of a doubleheader, but due to health and safety protocols, that game had to be called off. The official status of that game is a COVID no contest.
The Tiger women are now 2-11 overall and 2-7 in conference play. They will play at Fontbonne University on Saturday at 1 p.m. The Tiger men (4-8, 3-5) will play in Game 2.
