KEOKUK -- After a thrilling overtime victory in its Homecoming, Washington High School made sure Keokuk did not get to experience that in the Chiefs' Homecoming.
The Demons scored touchdowns on their first two possessions on the way to a 28-6 Class 3A victory Friday in the first night of District 6 action. After starting with two consecutive losses, the Demons have won three consecutive games.
'Without a doubt, it helped to jump out early and take control of the game against a young team,” Washington coach James Harris said. 'We did a nice job starting the game. It was big for us to do that.”
The Demons drove 60 yards on their first possession with the key play a pass to Cade Hennigan before Luke Turner scored the first of his three rushing touchdowns.
Turner finished the game with 92 yards on 19 carries and was 10 of 20 passing for 186 yards.
The second possession went 70 yards with the key play a 50-yard pass to Ethan Hunt.
Tristin Westphal-Edwards ran 16 times for 66 yards and had a kick return for 40 yards. Garrett Ikerd ran five times for 67 yards. Hennigan had six receptions for 112 yards.
It was 22-0 at halftime.
'Our defense did a great job,” Harris said.
Keokuk had just 66 yards rushing and 81 yards passing.
'Most of that was in the second half when we got complacent,” Harris said. 'We have to get better in the second half. We needed to play a more complete game. It was nice to have most of the kids back and playing.”
Washington's next district opponent is Friday at Solon (5-0), which is ranked third.
