Airman Tyler Howard of Washington completed basic training recently. He is the son of Jamie and Dawn Howard of Wayland, and Heather and Bobby Schenk of Washington. Howard graduated from Washington High School in 2013.He will receive additional training in the aircraft armament systems of F35s. He will be stationed at Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, Texas.

Jim Hesseltine of Brighton raised a nice potato crop this summer. He is holding his biggest potato that weighs 2 pounds, 7 ounces. This is his first year growing potatoes.

The Washington High School Class of 1959 held its 55th year reunion on Aug. 23, at Hal Colliver's farm, with 55 classmates attending The class once numbered 106. Thirty-two are deceased.

The Washington Public Library staff are encouraging teens to read and discuss the 2014 All Iowa Reads selection "Little Wolves" by Thomas Mortman with them.
