At this conference, students competed in business skills competitions in many areas and attended general sessions. Nevin Meredith of the Iowa Senior Medicare Patrol will be presenting at Halcyon House in Washington on Monday, March 24, at 2 p.m. His presentation will provide information on how to protect yourself from identity theft and Medicare fraud, including some of the current schemes and scams. On Saturday, Feb. 22, three students from the Mid-Prairie Community School District attended the fourth annual Young Musicians Honor Band, hosted by Prairie Creek Intermediate School in the College Community School District. The three students performed with the black band for beginners, and their conductor was Roger Leuders.

Tiffany Halvorson of Calmar earned a scholarship this spring for her academic achievements.Halvorson received the Sherman Oyen Endowed Scholarship and is enrolled in the nursing programs at the Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC) Calmar campus. She is the daughter of Denise and Darrell Chalupa of Washington. Tiffany and her husband, Charles, have three children, Charlie, Johannah and Isaiah.

The Iowa Association of Naturalists (IAN) and the Iowa Conservation Education Coalition (ICEC) is proud to announce that the Washington County Conservation Board is the 2013 recipient of its Outstanding Environmental Education Program with two or fewer naturalists. The West Chester United Methodist Women met at the church on March 12, 2014, for a sewing day, with five members attending. Twenty towel chest napkins and 28 triangle chest napkins were made and distributed to area nursing homes. Beverly Zehr planned and organized the sewing day. Broadway actor Duffy Hudson will perform as George Burns in his one-man show, ?George Burns Alive Again and in Concert,? at the Washington Public Library, on Friday March 21 at 7 p.m. Hudson will tell stories, sing songs and talk about the entertainer?s life. His past library performances include Edgar Allan Poe, and the Christmas Carol. The show is free and open to the public.
