Residents take a ‘tour’ of the Netherlands
Apr. 13, 2022 9:30 am
This past Sunday in Epworth Chapel, Minister Scott Johnson of Bethel Church led us during worship. He read from Scripture Romans 1:18-23 and the sermon was titled “God’s Invisible/Visible Qualities.” Minister Scott Johnson was joined by pianist Virginia Tschantz. It was a beautiful Sunday in Epworth.
Welkom! April is blossoming with holidays, including April Fools’ Day, Passover, Easter, Earth Day, and more. It is also the month Amsterdam celebrates King’s Day and hosts the Tulip Festival. Therefore, Arborwood residents during Tour of the Country are visiting the land of cycling, canals, clogs, and tulips this month.
This past week during Tour of the Country, Arborwood residents enjoyed a presentation about the history, culture and people of the Netherlands. Residents learned that Netherland is the number one exporter of cheese in the world, 60% of the Netherlands residents ride a bike every day, and there is one car to every three bicycles. The Netherlands is the location of the world’s largest flower garden, producing over 800 different types of tulip bulbs.
Arborwood residents learned about traditional Dutch dishes, such as Erwtensoep (soup made of split peas, carrots, pork, leeks and celery) and Rookwork (smoked sausage). The residents baked a Dutch Butter Cake. Dutch Butter Cake is made out of just four ingredients, flour, butter, sugar and salt. We had a wonderful time learning about the Netherlands and even a better time eating the cake!
The week was full of energy as Rosewood residents exercised to the oldies! It’s not unusual to have some fun dancing at the same time. When that old familiar song comes on it just makes you want to move even more! With the season of Easter upon us and spring everywhere, residents have been enjoying movies in the living room with those themes. One of those being the movie “Hop.” Everyone enjoys the movies and time together relaxing.
What a fun activity at “Artist with HeArt.” We made Easter bunny planters using recycled cans and painted them white. For the face, we used pink and white foam cut outs and googly eyes. Silk daffodils finished off this cute bunny planter. After everyone’s hard work and a lot of glue we enjoyed doughnuts and coffee that a resident’s daughter brought in for an afternoon snack.
Residents joined forces on Friday morning to fill over 1,000 Easter eggs with all kinds of sweet treats. With over a thousand Easter eggs, we still had candy leftover! Thank you to all who donated candy for the hunt! On Saturday morning, children gathered at Halcyon House to participate in the campuswide Easter Egg Hunt. Residents grinned ear to ear as they watched the little tikes run around collecting the colorful, filled eggs. The Easter bunny even made a grand appearance! Thank you to all who made this day possible.
It was another wonderful week at Halcyon House!
