Fairfield, Iowa, has long been a bastion of creativity, inviting all sorts of artisans and entrepreneurs to call it home. While the scenery may be tranquil — featuring rolling hills and cornfields as far as the eye can see — this small city of 10,000 buzzes with creative life.
Home to over 300 artists and musicians plus Maharishi International University, Fairfield has become something of a hub for multiple cultures that brings together artistry, nature-lovers and foodies alike! Don't let its out-of-the way location deter you — it’s well worth exploring this charming melting pot in southern Iowa, where chill vibes meet creativity head on!
Here’s some activities we suggest you dig into while visiting Fairfield:
1. Explore your artistic side; From art galleries and workshops, Fairfield offers countless opportunities for people to explore their artistic sides. The ICON Gallery, the Fairfield Art Association Gallery, and Wege Gallery on the MIU campus, are the most popular and prominent galleries in Fairfield, each offering the visual delights of local, regional and national talent. You’ll want to enroll in some of the classes and try your hand at painting. And be sure to look in the nooks and crannies downtown to find local art that is tucked away in the alleys.
2. Get outdoors; Whether you're a hiker, biker, or birdwatcher, Fairfield is home to a variety of natural habitats, including prairies, wetlands, and woodlands, making it a perfect place to explore and enjoy the great outdoors. We’re always bragging on the Fairfield Loop trail and all its tributaries. This adventurous path winds its way through the many parks in Fairfield, giving you access to an ever-changing landscape. Fairfield parks are also great staging grounds for fishing, birding and kayaking.
3. Ride some gravel; One of the best ways to experience the beauty of Fairfield and the surrounding county is by bike. The area is home to a network of well-maintained gravel and dirt roads that wind through the countryside, offering stunning views of rolling hills, lush farmland, and picturesque lakes and rivers. Riding on gravel and dirt roads is a unique experience, it's a way to connect with nature and the landscape, and it gives a sense of adventure. The roads are quiet, and you'll often find yourself surrounded by nothing but open spaces and beautiful countryside.
4. That’s entertainment; The Fairfield Arts & Convention Center has held the title of “entertainment oasis” for all of Southeast Iowa since opening 15 years ago. Its reputation and dedication to entertaining the folks in Southeast Iowa has been strengthened now that it is featuring a state of the art movie theater. Looking for local music? Then Café Paradiso is the place to be. Known for its intimate setting and great espresso, Café Paradiso is also known for hosting live music events. The café brings in local, regional, and national talent, and is a great spot for music lovers to catch a show and discover new artists.
5. Grab a bite; When it comes to food, Fairfield is a force to be reckoned with. This small town has a big reputation as the Southeast Iowa foodie hub, and for good reason. With over 30 locally-owned restaurants representing 15 different countries, the variety of cuisines on offer is astounding. One of the things that makes Fairfield's food scene so special is the emphasis on comfort food. You won't find fancy, upscale restaurants here, just good, honest, and delicious food that will make your taste buds dance with joy. From delicious homemade pizzas to mouth-watering BBQ, to spicy Thai curries, and everything in between. Be sure to wash it all down with locally brewed cider from Fishback & Stephenson Cider House or Jefferson County Ciderworks, or try locally produced wines from Cedar Valley Winery.
While small towns are typically known for being sleepy and boring, Fairfield, Iowa, is going to surprise you. This eclectic hot spot is definitely a place you’ll want to check out. With plenty of eateries, super cute shops, local music and art venues, and the great outdoors all within 6.5 miles, what are you waiting for? Isn’t it time you got off the beaten path?
