Jefferson County ISU Extension and Outreach is hosting several programs this fall that focus on various parts of health, from nutrition to safety to how to promote healthy relationships.
The extension office’s next program will be about promoting healthy eating among children, titled “I Only Want a Peanut Butter Sandwich! - Child Care Provider Training.” The class is online, and lasts from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 22.
“Worried about the child who only wants to eat one food? Is this healthy? It can be frustrating when all a child wants to eat is a peanut butter sandwich,” states the extension office on its website. “You’ll learn about eating habits that are normal for young children, strategies that promote healthy eating habits, and how to foster pleasant mealtime experiences — all while taste testing new foods.”
The intended audience for this class is child care providers, who can receive Child Care Professional Development Credit and Child and Adult Care Food Program Credit through the Iowa Department of Human Services.

On Sept. 30, Jefferson County Extension will conclude a series on safety in shooting sports with an online class at noon. That class is the final in a series of five classes that extension has held once a month since May.
The class features 4-H Safety and Education in Shooting Sports (SESS) and how it uses skills and disciplines of shooting to assist young people and their leaders in obtaining knowledge and developing life skills.

The extension office will host a series of nine 2-hour workshops on healthy parenting practices for young children called “ACT Raising Safe Kids.”
The online classes last from 6:30-8:30 p.m. and begin on Oct. 4 and end on Nov. 29, meeting weekly.
“Have you ever wondered if you are on the right path when parenting your children? If you would like to strengthen your parenting skills with children birth to age 8, join other parents and caregivers to learn about positive parenting practices that help create stable, safe, healthy, and nurturing environments and relationships,” the extension office stated.
The intended audience for these classes are adults and caregivers with children ages birth to 8 years.

The extension office will host a similar program for children a little bit older from Oct. 9 through Oct. 30 called “Helping Families InterACT.”
This online, weekly program will give resources, support and practice tips to families with children in grades 3-6. They’ll learn life skills needed to create and discover rewarding relationships.
Youth will meet from 6-7 p.m., while parents/guardians will meet from 7:15-8:15 p.m. Foster parent credit is available.
