Board of Supervisors
The Henry County Board of Supervisors consists of three District Representatives.
The board is responsible for authorizing all departmental budgets and policy setting.
Any major county action must be approved by the board, which receives direction and recommendations from other county officials relevant to the situation.
The supervisors meet every Thursday at 9 a.m. in the lower level of the courthouse, which is located in the county seat of Mt. Pleasant. All the meetings include an open forum session.

The county assessor is responsible for determining the valuation of property for property tax purposes in the county, including homes and land. The assessor determines the valuation of taxable property, which factors into the amount of taxes a property owner pays.

The county attorney is responsible for making recommendations to the Board of Supervisors and other county officials regarding legal matters. Besides offering legal counsel to the county, he also serves as prosecuting attorney in county court cases.

The county auditor is responsible for overseeing and recording all county financial records and taxation schedules, and for organizing and overseeing all elections.

The conservation director is responsible for overseeing the independent conservation board, which is the decision making and policy-setting board for all county wildlife districts and nature center.

The Clerk of District Court is a state office which is part of the Eighth Judicial District. They are the custodian of court records relating to civil court actions, probate court, small claims court, mental and substance abuse commitments, adoptions, change of name, Juvenile Court, dissolution of marriage, traffic court, criminal court and jury management.

The county Emergency Management Agency is responsible for county emergency planning requirements developed by the Iowa Homeland Security and Emergency Management Division under Chapter 29C and works in cooperation with the emergency response agencies within Henry County to develop emergency response planning, response and recovery guidance, and serves as the initial contact and liaison for Iowa Homeland Security issues at the state and federal levels.

The county engineer is responsible for overseeing the secondary roads department and crew. This department maintains county-owned roads, streets and parking lots and is responsible for the maintenance, paving and plowing of roads and bridges.

The county recorder is responsible for maintaining the county’s licensing — from marriage licenses to hunting and fishing licenses, as well as passports, recreational vehicle registration and property deeds. The office is the source for information regarding hunting seasons and regulations.

Henry County General Assistance provides funding assistance for rent, utilities, indigent burial, limited medical, limited transportation and determines eligibility for State Quota medical treatment at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.
Applicants must be residents of Henry County and meet eligibility requirements for assistance.

The county treasurer is responsible for handling and directing the county’s finances and overseeing operations and incoming revenue from the driver’s license and motor vehicle office at the courthouse.

The Public Health Director is responsible for implementing programs and services to improve the quality of life for Henry County residents.

The planning and zoning department administers and enforces Henry County’s land use laws, provides and reviews application forms for land use permits, and issues permits for projects which conform to the laws, and receives complaints of noncompliance and takes enforcement actions. The department also provides staff assistance to the zoning commission and zoning board of adjustment.

The sheriff is responsible for overseeing operations at the county jail and supervising the county’s deputy sheriffs.

The Veterans Affairs Director is responsible for the Henry County Veterans Service Office, which assists local veterans. The office provides assistance through a County Veteran Service Officer, who has specialized knowledge of laws passed by the U.S. Congress in the interests of veterans and dependents.
