Cambridge Investment Research began in 1981 when founder Eric Schwartz decided to start his own firm as a broker-dealer. Eric recognized that the hybrid model — one that allows financial advisers to adopt a fee and/or commission compensation approach — offered the flexibility many advisers wanted to offer their clients.
Though Eric started the business on the east coast, it was moved from Washington, D.C. to an office on the downtown square in Fairfield in 1992. After experiencing steady growth, in 2005 a 40,000 square foot, two-story building was constructed on Pleasant Plain Road in Fairfield, and a second three-story building was added in 2009.
The offices are situated on a 60-acre campus featuring a nearly four-acre pond and a half-mile walking path. Cambridge continues to expand to better serve the needs of the industry and also opened a Phoenix, Arizona location in 2020.
In early 2022, Cambridge kicked off an expansive building modernization project on the Pleasant Plain Road location in Fairfield. The final product includes an open space design to accommodate today’s work environment, including sit/stand workstations, desk sharing areas for commuters, and additional spaces for collaborative meetings to support in-person and virtual attendees. Upgrades in lighting, HVAC, and the installation of occupancy-based sensors help support green initiatives while reducing energy costs, enhancing comfort, and ensuring safety for associates.
This modernization project allows Cambridge to provide its associates with a modern and adaptable work environment, while addressing the technology and space needs of those working in the office full-time, on a hybrid schedule, or visiting from another location. The business just welcomed a record number of 34 interns between its Fairfield and Phoenix locations as part of the of The Next Step® internship program, and could easily accommodate workspace and technology needs for these students given the new environment.
In April 2023, Cambridge was honored for its renovations when it received the Business Improvement Award from the Fairfield Area Chamber of Commerce.
“Having operated in Fairfield for the better part of 40 years, the recognition reflects our ongoing commitment to continuous growth and innovation,” Cambridge said in a news release. “It’s also a testament to the hard work and dedication exhibited by all of the individuals, teams, and partners (including local contractors) that were part of the project.”
