Mack’s Automotive to add large paint-booth

FAIRFIELD — Mack’s Automotive in Fairfield is a leader in the automotive repair business thanks to its cutting-edge equipment and service-oriented staff.

The business is owned by Jason Craun, who reopened the body shop in 2019 that was founded by his grandfather Daryl McDowell in 1959, and continued by Craun’s father Doug McDowell from 1979 until 1995.

One reason Mack’s Automotive has had such success since Craun reopened it four years ago is its Global Finishing Solutions paint booth can bake a fresh coat of paint for 25 minutes, and after letting it set for just another 20 minutes, it’s ready for reassembly. Craun said this is so much faster than it was in the ‘70s and ‘80s, when workers had to wait a whole day for paint to dry.

Mack’s Automotive plans to continue the success of its paint booth business by adding a second Global Finishing Solutions paint booth that’s even larger at 60 feet (current one is 27 feet) and can accommodate coaches, campers, semis and buses. Craun said it should be up and running in 2024, if not sooner.

In addition to the paint booth, Mack’s Automotive has a REVO Infrared Curing System, with both the single and dual head. It performs a full cure on filler in nine minutes, full cure on primer in six minutes, and eliminates shrinkage when the paint is baked on.

The company’s world-class equipment is not the only reason it’s had such success. Craun said his employees bring a wealth of experience to the job, combined, over a 100 years of experience and that’s why the business has two apprentices working there now, with one just out of college and the other just out of high school.
