Mount Pleasant Library has a rich history and continues to grow
Jun. 21, 2023 9:45 am
In 1872, a group of Mount Pleasant Women known as the Ladies Reading Circle, created the Ladies Library Association.
In 1875, the group drew up Articles of Incorporation for the purpose “of establishing in Mount Pleasant a public library comprising a museum and works of art.”
The library was housed in several buildings, including the basement of the First Baptist Church, until a pledge of $12,500 from Andrew Carnegie — later raised to $15,000 — helped the Association open the library at the Main Street location (now the Southeastern Community College Extension Office). In 2005, the library opened in its current location of 307 E. Monroe Street.
The Mount Pleasant Public Library offers an array of services. Books, DVDs, audiobooks, music CDs, and even cake pans are available for checkout.
Electronic materials are available for checkout through Bridges and the Libby app (available on iOS & Android devices) using your library card.
An app called myLIBRO is also available for patrons and offers an easier way to access the library’s materials on the go. Three private study rooms, computers with internet access, and a local history room are also available for use.
In March 2023, a new space opened at the library.
The Children’s Discovery Center, located in the old AEA office space, provides an escape for children and parents through the joys of play. Giant Lincoln Logs, a room full of musical instruments, and too many other items to name, make up the items in the center. Current hours for the Children’s Discovery Center can be found on the library’s website, and Facebook page.
Library staff would like to extend a thank you to the community for its continued support of the library. Inquiries about library services can be made via phone (319) 385-1490 or email mtpleasant.director@gmail.com.
