The Associated Press released its first Top-10 boys basketball poll for all four classes of the 20-21 season late Monday and there was a lot of respect paid to basketball in the area, especially in Class 1A.
However, defending Southeast Conference champion Washington managed just two votes in Class 3A, while fellow league member Burlington matched those two votes in Class 4A. Burlington tied for third in the league with Mt. Pleasant last season behind second-place Keokuk. Washington's opponent last night was Pella, which was tied for fifth in 3A. Clear Creek-Amana, which had enough votes to be 14th, won the 3A third-place game last season. To qualify for state, the Clippers won Substate 5, which had all the 3A Southeast Conference teams along with Solon and Davenport Assumption.
Keota had enough votes to be tied for 12th with fellow South Iowa Cedar League's North Mahaska in Class 1A while nemesis Montezuma was tied for seventh.
The Southeast Iowa Super Conference had nobody ranked in the Top 10 but five teams mentioned, all in the South Division. They were New London, Notre Dame, Holy Trinity Catholic and Danville in Class 1A and West Burlington in 2A. New London's vote total would put them at 14th.
The River Valley Conference looks strong with three teams mentioned. Camanche won the third-place game last season in Class 2A and was ranked third, with fellow RVC teams Northeast and West Branch receiving votes.
The RVC's Monticello, which lost its opening2A state tournament game to Camanche last season, tied for ninth in 3A with the defending champions from Norwalk. In 1A, Wapsie Valley was fourth while No. 1 was North Linn, which lost the Class 2A title game last season.
Boyden-Hull in Class 2A was the only defending champion to be ranked first. Ankeny in 4A was 11th, one vote ahead of Ottumwa.
