Eagles up, Panthers out
By: Doug Brenneman Feb. 16, 2021 12:00 am Updated: Feb. 16, 2021 5:00 pm
Area teams Keota and Pekin both suffered losses last week and it had opposite effects on the status of the position of the teams in the Associated Press Iowa high school boys basketball poll released Monday.
Keota fell to Cardinal in a last-minute scheduled game Friday 60-57. Keota moved up from to ninth from last week's No. 10 in Class 1A. Pekin lost on its home floor to New London Thursday in the Super Conference Shootout series. The Panthers fell out of the 2A top 10 but still garnered votes, enough to be in the 11th position. The two teams losses may have had opposite results in the polls because Keota is a 1A school that is a fourth the size of 2A Cardinal. Pekin is a 2A school and New London is 1A.
Washington's second consecutive Southeast Conference championship impressed an AP voter. It got a single vote in 3A where Clear Creek-Amana got three votes. Washington defeated CCA Feb. 6.
River Valley Conference member Monticello is unbeaten but ranked second in 3A. Pella is fifth. The Dutch are a likely postseason game for the Demons.
West Branch escaped Mid-Prairie on a last-second shot in an RVC game last week and moved up a spot in Class 2A. Albia, which defeated Washington Jan. 5, got four votes.
Keota's fellow South Iowa Cedar League member, Montezuma, is sixth in 1A. Keota is 16th in 1A as a team in steals, 14th in blocks. Brady Duwa is 21st in blocks. Carson Sprouse is 25th in steals.
Super Conference members Wapello (3) and New London (4) were the recipients of votes in 1A.
