Oct. 24, 2022 9:03 am
A fire in the early hours of Monday, Oct. 24, damaged a wind turbine owned by MidAmerican Energy and caused a field fire near Williamsburg.
The Williamsburg Fire Department responded to a report of a wind turbine on fire at 12:39 a.m. Oct. 24, in the 1700 block of 230th Street, rural Williamsburg. When firefighters arrived on scene at 12:56 a.m., the head of the turbine was fully engulfed in flames.
“This type of fire is unique and challenging, as there are many factors to consider including falling debris on fire and the turbine blades and unit falling apart overhead,” said a post on the Williamsburg Fire Department’s Facebook page. “WFD secured the scene to ensure safety of everyone in the area. Once it was deemed safe, the field fire caused by falling debris was extinguished.”
At 3:01 a.m., MidAmerican Energy arrived on scene and took over operations of the wind turbine. No injuries to firefighters or civilians were reported.
The Williamsburg Fire Department was assisted by the Iowa County Sheriff’s office; Iowa County EMS and MidAmerican Energy.
