Let the people decide our next County Attorney
LETTER TO THE EDITOR

The recent resignation of the Henry County Attorney has created more than a vacancy. It has created a moment of decision for our community.
The County Attorney plays a critical role in our justice system. This office prosecutes crimes, protects victims, and represents the public interest every day. It is a position of trust, authority, and consequence. When an elected office like this suddenly becomes vacant, how we choose the replacement matters.
While Iowa law allows for an appointment, I believe the best path forward for the public good is a special election.
This role was designed to be chosen by the people, not filled quietly for the sake of convenience. At a time when public confidence in institutions is fragile, transparency and participation are not luxuries. They are necessities. A special election allows voters to hear from candidates, understand their priorities, and decide who they trust to uphold justice on behalf of our county.
Appointments may be efficient, but they are not always transparent. Elections are democratic. A special election strengthens legitimacy, accountability, and community trust. It ensures that the next County Attorney answers directly to the citizens of Henry County, not just to those who made the appointment.
There is now a petition circulating to call for a special election, and I urge residents to sign it. This is a constructive and lawful way for all citizens … Independent, Republican, and Democrat … to say that our voices matter and that this decision should rest with the voters.
I strongly encourage the Henry County Board of Supervisors to support this democratic process and allow the people to choose their next County Attorney through an open election.
Democracy works best when we use it. This is one of those moments.
Respectfully, Kasey Conrad Mt. Pleasant
