Questions for incoming school board
First off, I would like to congratulate all the winners in Tuesday's election. Now, I would like to address the new school board members in Fairfield.
During the forum pre-election, I heard some of you make comments regarding the failed bond issue for a new Middle School. I heard how the parents of students need to be educated as to why this would be a good idea. I heard the word "community" used also. As a member of said community, I'd like some clarifications.
First, why should we go into debt for a school system that is by your own admission, not only failing to retain students but also squandering money? Secondly, explain just what people on a fixed income are getting out of this? The Police, Fire Department, Streets, Parks Department, Water, City Government, even the Library all are beneficial to all citizens. Whether or not you use those services is up to your discretion and circumstances.
People who do not have children in school are never consulted when policy changes are made. They have no voice as to curriculum. They are not included in discussion about school closures nor the need for new buildings, yet our taxes go to fund the schools too.
When I moved to Fairfield in 1995, there were five elementary schools in the Fairfield District. We are down to two. Ten years ago, we passed a bond issue for an addition to the High School because we were told we need more space. All enrollment has done since then is go down. So I am not falling for the lack of space gambit again. Give us a good compelling reason, one that is not caused by the desire for a new building, "just because" or for a failure to maintain what you already have.
