No Kings rally-goers persist

On Sunday, March 2, a group of Henry County citizens stood in front of the courthouse, holding signs with a variety of messages, each referring to some issue of concern. Labeled a “Free Speech Rally,” the gathering was based on a common fear that democracy in America was in danger. That rally has occurred every Sunday since from noon to one o’clock.
The size of the group has varied from about 50 to 100 individuals, always forming a solid line in the block in front of the courthouse. Regardless of weather conditions (and two Sundays saw heat indexes above 100 degrees), the crowd has persisted in taking a stand.
On May 18, an individual drove a motorcycle onto the sidewalk and drove behind the line of people at a very unsafe speed. It appeared that the clear intent of the driver was to intimidate those exercising their First Amendment rights. The potential for serious injury was high. Nevertheless, the number of those standing there increased the following week.
This Sunday marks six months of this weekly rally. While the No Kings Rally in June was notable for the very large crowds, this movement is remarkable for its persistence. These citizens are “in it for the long haul.”
