I am writing to question the actions of the Fairfield City Council to call a special election to fill a Third Ward vacancy on the Council. In two months a city election will take place, and this contest could have easily been added to that election.
Perhaps the Council doesn't understand the cost of a special election, even if for only one ward. The Auditor's Office employees will be asked to put in extra time. The polling site must be rented. Three people will be employed to man the site. Machines will have to be tested and programmed. Ballots will have to be printed. If early voting is available, extra workers will be needed there. All of the above-mentioned things will cost the city money. It seems a rather extravagant expenditure of city funds for four Council meetings.
Everything is set for this special election. Perhaps in future situations such as this, the Council will consider better ways to spend the city's coffers.
