Want answers from Sheriff’s Association
It seems the bulk of my annual donation to the Iowa Sheriffs' and Deputies Association Institute has not gone to train officers and help underprivileged children as the letter I received from my Sheriff states. ("Iowa Sheriff's group spends little on charity." Southeast Iowa Union, Jan. 17, 2023). Far more has gone to questionable fundraising sources than to officers and kids. That is the bad news.
The good news is I found out about this before sending another check.
Hats off to the Southeast Iowa Union and reporters at the Iowa Capital Dispatch for bringing this matter to light. There is surely anxiety in the hearts of young journalists as they go to press with a revelation like this. The reporting is well done and necessary.
There is also good news as we can count on the Sheriffs and Deputies to straighten this out. After all, these folks regularly warn us of scams. Duly embarrassed, they may have been scammed themselves.
Our Sheriffs and Deputies keep us safe. That's why I contribute. They have little time for these shenanigans.
We know the men and women in law enforcement care deeply about the training of fellow officers and the well-being of children. I'll send another check when they assure me the house is in order.
