13th Annual Spring Preview Cattle Show Held

Washington County 4-H County Council sponsored their 13th annual Washington County Spring Preview Cattle Show on Saturday, April 23 with support from the 4-H beef department and Washington County Cattlemen volunteers. It was an Iowa Junior Beef Breeds Association sanctioned show held at the Washington County Fairgrounds. 65 youth with 76 calves from Washington County and across the state participated.
The Grand Champion market animal was awarded to Ava Noonan of Bernard with crossbred steer. The $250 prize money was sponsored by KCTC of Kalona. Reserve champion market steer went to Taylor Thomas from Gilman with a Chianina steer. The $150 prize money was sponsored by KCTC of Kalona.
In the breeding division, Supreme Champion breeding heifer went to Addyson Lehman from West Liberty with a Maintainer heifer. $250 prize money was sponsored by Washington Keokuk County Corn & Soybean Growers Association. Reserve champion breeding heifer went to a Washington County resident Kestyn Holmes of Wellman with a foundation Simmental heifer. $150 prize money sponsored by Washington Keokuk County Corn & Soybean Growers Association. 4th Overall breeding heifer awarded to Kestyn Holmes and 5th Overall breeding heifer awarded to Kinley Holmes.
28 Washington County exhibitors participated in the show earning honors.
Breeding Show: Champion Angus - Kinley Holmes; Champion Red Angus - Leah Evans; Champion Shorthorn - Libby Sojka; Reserve Champion Shorthorn-Plus - Jade Sheetz; Champion Simmental - Leah Evans; Reserve Champion Simmental - Maggie Rinner; Champion Foundation Simmental - Kestyn Holmes; Reserve Champion Foundation Simmental - Jacob Eichelberger; Champion Commercial Heifer - Kestyn Holmes.
Market Show: 5th Overall Market Animal - Ryland Shalla with his Reserve Champion Market Heifer. Reserve Champion Maine Anjou - Parker Shalla; Reserve Champion Simmental - Preston Ford.
The cattle show was planned by the Washington County 4-H County Council with the help of the 4-H Youth Committee and beef department. Youth volunteers assisted with set up, check-in, show support and clean up. Proceeds from the event go towards 4-H programming and fairground improvement projects. The event was made possible by the generous support of local businesses and families.
Kestyn and Kinley Holmes of Wellman had a great day showing at the Spring Preview Cattle Show earning three of the Top five breeding animals. Kestyn earned Reserve Champion and 4th Overall Breeding Heifer. Kinley earned 5th Overall Breeding Heifer. They are the daughters of Jared and Megan Holmes.
