2011 Iowa State Fair Competition Results: cold pasta salad, commercial wine, chocolate dessert

Sonny Melchers of Fairfield secured top honors in the adult category of the pasta salad contest and was awarded a $100 Visa gift card and an apron.

Entries were judged on nutrition and appearance.

IOWA WINE COMMERCIAL COMPETITION

Cedar Valley Winery of Batavia captured double gold status with their Norton wine, which was among 116 wines entered by 24 wineries in the Iowa Wine Commercial Competition.

The Norton wine was one of three in the running for the Sweepstakes award ? the overall top entrant in the competition based on blind tastings of two panels of judges.

In addition to receiving double gold status for its Norton wine, Cedar Valley Winery won bronze medals with its Seyval and LaCrosse wines.

Another area winery, Whispering Pines of Keosauqua, won a silver medal for its White Diamond wine.

DESSERTS FOR CHRISTINA CONTEST

Nanette Conger of Fairfield won first place in the Desserts for Christina Contest judged Sunday.

Entrants were asked to create a dessert incorporating chocolate as a main ingredient. Entries were then judged on taste, appearance and originality.
