Eighth-to 12th-grade 4-H?ers interested in the Animal Science swine area are invited to be a part of this new 4-H field trip to Iowa State University on March 28. The group will spend the day learning about carcass evaluation, pork quality, and proper handling.
Participants will experience hands-on learning when they deconstruct a pork carcass to learn more about pig anatomy. They evaluate meat for muscling, quality and trimness, learn what affects flavor and then participate in a pork taste test panel. Youth will also learn tips for handling pigs and run them through a maze. While on the ISU campus they will get a tour of the meats lab and talk with current animal science students.
4-H?ers can register by sending the registration fee to the Washington County Extension office. This fee will cover transportation, insurance, and lunch. Registrations are due March 7 and will be taken on first-come, first-serve basis due to limited space.
Questions may be directed to the Washington County Extension Office, 319/653-4811.
