By Grace Davidson, Jefferson County Iowa State University Extension and Outreach County Youth Coordinator
In 1922, Jefferson County had 24 clubs with 335 members. Names of some of the clubs were The True Blue, Busy Circle, The Nimble Fingers, and Cedar Busy Bees. Currently, Jefferson County has over 200 members and seven 4-H clubs: Future Leaders, Des Moines Ramblers, Packwood Trojans, Future Forgers, Ceniteers, Jefferson G's, and Walnut Ridge Workers. A few of the clubs we see now were founded in the 1930s!
A 4-H club's purpose is to create a culture of learning where everyone is involved in a collective effort of understanding. Successful clubs will embrace the diversity of experiences within the group, share knowledge, value its members to build a sense of community, provide a range of leadership roles and skill-building activities, and much more!
Youth are encouraged once a year to present in front of their clubs about something they are passionate about or interested in. It could be on any topic: animals, trucks, technology, etc. The possibilities are endless! Many members turn their club presentation into a static project for the county fair!
