4-H Senior Feature: Kaitlin Martin

This week’s outstanding Washington County 4-H senior is Kaitlin Martin.

Parents: Deric and Jamie Martin

School: Mid-Prairie High School

4-H Club: Lime Creek Limelights

4-H Projects: Meat goats, Poultry, Home improvement, Woodworking, Visual arts, Photography, Surprise design, Garden project.

4-H Activities: Lime Creek Limelights treasurer for three years, Lime Creek Limelights photographer, Clover kid Mentor for two years, Lime Creek Limelights Leadership Team.

Special 4-H memory/highlight: I have always enjoyed the project side of 4-H and my biggest project accomplishments are winning Reserve Grand Champion with my market wether and qualifying for the State Fair with my projects and several pictures. Winning Reserve Grand Champion with my market wether was a major accomplishment of mine because we didn’t spend a lot of money on the wether while still working hard and getting him ready for the fair is what paid off and helped me win.

Other Activities: Mid-Prairie FFA Chapter, National Honor Society, Big Hawk Little Hawk Mentor Program, Student Leadership Team, Silver Cord, Iowa Soccer Club, and Mid-Prairie High School Soccer.

What I learned in 4-H: The most important skill that I have gained from 4-H would be my public speaking skills. There are many opportunities in 4-H that have helped me improve and grow as a person. When I first joined 4-H I was shy and was scared to talk in front of others. Throughout the years I built up confidence and am more comfortable when it comes to public speaking.

Future plans: My future plans are to attend a four-year college, which is to be determined, to obtain a bachelor's degree in Biology. Then continue my schooling at the University of Iowa to achieve a Master’s in Physical Therapy. After schooling, I will test to gain my PT license and become a Physical Therapist.
