4-H Senior Feature: Zane Fisher

Washington County 4-H seeks to honor its senior members who are making a difference in their communities, and today the spotlight shines on Zane Fisher.

4-H Club: Bows and Bullets 4H club

Projects: shooting sports competitions, woodworking, safety in shooting sports, horticulture, visual arts, communications presentations, working exhibit, bucket bottle calf, goats, chickens

4-H Activities: Shooting sports competitions in .22 rifle, air rifle, compound bow archery, and muzzleloader at State and National levels, Archery shooting booth at the fair, county council, work with the little hands on the farm, pancake breakfast official scramble egg maker and server, Intermediate trips, Goat weigh in helper

Special 4-H memory/highlight: qualifying for and attending the National 4H Shooting Sports competition in Grand Island Nebraska in small bore rifle 2019 and air rifle 2021, and now qualified for muzzleloader in 2022. I also qualified for Nationals in compound bow Archery but I can only compete in one discipline in a year. I won the state championship in 2020 in .22 rifle and 2021 in Muzzleloader.

My favorite memory was shooting the air rifle competition at Nationals. The competition is timed. I almost gave my coach, teammates, all the Iowa group’s parents and the range officials a heart attack. I got my last shot off with only 6 seconds to spare. My mom was nervous, but I wasn’t worried. I knew I would get my shot done in time. No problem

By participating in the shooting sports competitions, I have learned how to handle the pressure of competition and remain calm when things don’t go the way you want. We are fortunate to have a shooting sports program in Washington county because not many counties in Iowa have one.

Other Activities: FFA, Football, weight lifting, school archery, silver cord volunteering

Future plans: attend college for Natural Resources/ Forestry.
