4-H?ers and parents gathered Wednesday, March 9, for the Know Your Swine Session at the Washington County Extension office. Those just starting their 4-H swine career were encouraged to attend and learn some basics on swine care, facilities, equipment, feeding and showmanship tips.
Washington County Pork Producer, Joel Huber, shared early care, facility and biosecurity tips. The Pork Producers help sponsor this class by providing speakers for this class and interviewers in July when these exhibitors share about their 4-H swine experience. While 4-H swine superintendent Ryan Gerot gave suggestions for feed, he also explained the derby pig process. Amy Green, 4-H/Youth Coordinator, was present to answer questions regarding the Single Source Commercial Swine Class which is in its fourth year as a special swine class at the Washington County Fair. All speakers have a strong connection to the current swine industry and were able to answer questions for 4-H members.
Please contact the Washington County Extension Office, 319-653-4811, with any questions regarding the 4-H swine project area, single source commercial swine class or about getting involved with 4-H.
