Over 20 4-H?ers and parents gathered Wednesday, March 26, for the Know Your Swine session at the Washington County Extension office. Those just starting their 4-H swine career were encouraged to attend and learn some basics on swine care, facilities, equipment, feeding and showmanship tips.
A Washington County pork producer shared early care, facility and health tips. 4-H senior swine showman Macy Marek demonstrated showmanship techniques. While 4-H swine superintendent Ryan Gerot gave suggestions for feed, he also explained the derby pig process. Amy Green, 4-H/Youth coordinator, was present to answer questions regarding the Single Source Commercial Swine Class which is in its third year as a special swine class at the Washington County Fair. All speakers have a strong connection to the current swine industry and were able to answer questions for 4-H members.
Please contact the Washington County Extension Office, 319-653-4811, with any questions regarding the 4-H swine project area, single source commercial swine class or about getting involved with 4-H.
