4-Hers and Clover Kids work together through goat mentoring
Jul. 1, 2021 2:15 pm
With almost three weeks until the Washington County Fair, 4-H members, Clover Kids, leaders and volunteers are busy getting ready.
One unique event to the Washington County Fair is the Clover Kid mentoring program. Several department areas pair a clover kid with experienced 4-H exhibitors to learn about that project area. Clover Kid goat mentoring pairs 2nd grade Clover Kids with a 4-H goat showman. They meet several times before the fair at the 4-Her’s farm getting to know each other while the 4-Her mentors the younger member about the goat species.
The Clover Kids then get to show their mentor’s goat in the show ring at the Clover Kid Goat Show. This show is immediately following the 4-H/FFA Goat Show on Tuesday, July 20 and is the perfect example of the partnerships and leadership opportunities that happen in 4-H.
For more information on Washington County 4-H or the Clover Kid program, contact the Washington County Extension Office at 319-653-4811. Follow “Washington County 4-H-Iowa” on Facebook.
Washington Go Getter 4-H member Oaklee Sobaski meets with her Clover Kid partners Adrian Green and Callie Brink. During their visit, they practiced leading the goat, setting the goat up for the judge and also how to brush and groom goats. Green and Brink will show Sobaski’s goat in the Clover Kids’ Goat Show on July 20 at the Washington County Fair. (Photo courtesy of Amy Green)
