4-H?ers get hands-on experience at sewing workshop

4-H values hands-on learning, and the Ready, Set, Sew! workshop series has been geared to getting 4-H?ers behind the sewing machine wheel. Thirteen 4-H members attended the workshop Saturday, March 28, to complete a gum drop pillow. These great-looking finished products would work well as a reading pillow, ottoman or room accent.
The workshop offered basic sewing lessons on terms, safety, machine parts and stitches through hands-on learning. Participants completed a Find and Seek to recognize machine parts. After practicing stitching forward and back, and a few simple shapes, they were ready to conquer the pillow. The 4-H?ers each worked with an adult partner to complete each step and then received a basic sewing item to help start their own kits at home.
Sewing and clothing are both project areas 4-H?ers can explore while in 4-H. The session was led by 4-H volunteer Barbie Ford with volunteers Donna Yoder, Krista Gaal, Addie Gaal, Shirley Bohr, and Kay Hoyle assisting 4-H youth.
Washington County 4-H hopes to offer another sewing workshop this fall. Please contact them if you are interested in volunteering, at 319-653-4811. Follow ?Washington County 4-H ? Iowa? on Facebook for more pictures of this workshop.
