LYRA, an a cappella group of four professional vocalists from St. Petersburg, Russia, will present a concert of Russian choral music 7 p.m. Saturday, May 4, at the Trenton United Methodist Church. The first part of the concert, sacred music of Russian Orthodox Church, includes ancient songs to works of famous masters and little-known but remarkable Russian composers of the 18th-20th centuries. The second part of their program is made up of Russian folk songs: comic, lyric, dancing, love songs. The duration of the concert is 60 - 70 minutes.
This is a unique opportunity to share the enormous Russian musical heritage. Come and enjoy the sounds of Russia as interpreted by real Russians. All the singers are professionals singing in different professional choirs and opera houses of St. Petersburg. Their spring 2019 tour includes over 30 concerts in six Midwestern states.LYRA first appeared in concert in 1994. Since then they have performed not only in Russia, but across Western Europe, Scandinavia, and the United States. International awards include recognition from the Montreux (Switzerland) International Choir Festival and the Coleraine International Choral Festival of Northern Ireland. The singers are University trained, and although their occupations are different (choral conductor, opera singer, music teacher, instrumentalist), they are united by their passion for ensemble singing.
Trenton United Methodist Church is pleased to present this LYRA concert as part of the congregation's yearlong celebration of its 125th anniversary. Supper will be served beginning at 5:30 p.m., with the concert to begin at 7 p.m. The supper is free and there is no admission charge for this extraordinary opportunity. A free-will offering will be accepted to honor the musicians.
Trenton is located 10 miles northwest of Mt. Pleasant, on paved roads. The concert site is fully accessible with plenty of free parking. All people are welcome to attend the 125th year special events or to join the congregation for worship Sunday mornings at 9 a.m. Find them on Facebook at Trenton United Methodist Church.
