[Editor’s note: The Washington Public Library presents a review of two books this week, “The Great Quake” by Henry Fountain and “The Star-Crossed Sisters of Tuscany” by Lori Nelson Spielman]
“The Great Quake” by Henry Fountain
On March 27, 1964, Alaska was shaken and torn by a 9.2 earthquake, the second largest in world history. This book is well written and drew me into its pages. We are introduced to the people that experience the biggest quake in America and visit some of them again 50 years later.
You’ll get touches of Alaskan history and will be amazed by the accounts of the power of the earth and water. It was interesting to learn about the development of the study of earthquakes and what men and women went through to study this tragedy. I recommend this book.

“The Star-Crossed Sisters of Tuscany” by Lori Nelson Spielman
I enjoyed the book. A slow start but stick with it. The author’s description of Venice and Amalfie, even Emilia’s hometown, Bensonhurst, are really amazing. You can picture all of it like you are there.
I think the book is a cross between a historical novel and a love story. It goes back and forth between present day and the past. A great book to just read and relax.
