The Washington, Iowa Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) met at the Game Room of Halcyon House on Feb. 17 at 7 p.m. Co-hostesses for the evening were Linda Sturdevant, Alice Edgin and Elaine Bozman.
Highlights of the business meeting included Karen Murphy reporting that the Healthy Relationships Summit, which AAUW helped sponsor, was quite successful. It brought together many agencies and individuals who serve those in difficult relationships. Julia Gamon reported on the popularity of the groups? Little Free Library located at the Goodwill site. President McConnell shared that the Goodwill manager has said she is very pleased with the addition. Positive comments and suggestions were shared about the November AAUW-sponsored National Honor Society Reception.
The group is coordinating spring career speakers for WRAP (Washington Regional Alternative Program) students. Members volunteered to contact speakers in the following careers: EMT, pharmacy tech., as well as job opportunities working at the casino and at a retirement home. Once again this year AAUW committed to offering scholarships to help women complete their educations; publicity will begin. President McConnell closed the meeting by sharing that the state AAUW meeting is at UNI in Cedar Falls on April 10-11.
Member Ellen Krueger gave the interesting program on Women Who Made a Difference in Washington. She told of the significant women who helped in the founding of Washington, as well as highlighting many of the women ?firsts? ? such as teacher, principal, minister, store owner, doctor and realtor. Not only was the program very informational but Ellen?s fun stories about some of the women were quite entertaining.
