Mar. 1, 2023 9:37 am
Allison Rees, a senior at Washington High School, won the Optimist Club of Washington’s essay contest based on a theme of “Who is an Everyday Hero that Brings Out the Optimism in You?”
Rees was awarded First Place for this honor. In addition, the essay will be sent to the Iowa District level to be judged along with winners from other Optimist Clubs in the district. A $2,500 college scholarship is available for the top winner at the district level.
“Allison did a wonderful job of articulating this year’s theme. She expressed herself well through the essay and deserved the honor of first place,” said Optimist Club President Mary White.
Allison is the daughter of Tyler and Mindi Rees, Washington who attended with her. Karen Troutman attended as the guest and was the inspiration for her essay.
Completing the top three finalists were Elizabeth Snyder, daughter of Jamie and Michelle Snyder, Richland, IA. and Emma Kaye, daughter of Matt and Erin Kaye, Washington, IA.
