Current data suggests that because of the increasing number of people age 65 and older in the United States, the annual number of new cases of Alzheimer?s and other dementias is projected to double by the year 2050.
The Alzheimer?s Association will hold a Know the 10 Signs: Early Detection Matters class on Jan. 19, 2016, at Jefferson County Medical Center, at 3:30 p.m., to assist attendees in understanding the difference between age-related memory loss, Alzheimer?s and dementia. Participants will also learn what to do if they or someone they know has signs and symptoms of the disease or receives a diagnosis of Alzheimer?s or another dementia. The class will include information for families to work on together to assist in planning for the future and in receiving the care possible.
Video clips, of real people who are living with the early stages of dementia and their families, address fears and myths associated with Alzheimer?s disease, is an additional part of the program. The workshop will cover the following topics:
? The 10 warning signs
? Basic overview of Alzheimer?s disease
? Risk factors
? What is involved in getting a diagnosis
? Benefits of early detection including accessing available treatment, planning for the future and participating in clinical trials
