American Association of University Women
The Washington, Iowa Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) met at the home of Karen Murphy on Tuesday, Aug. 19, at 6:30 p.m. for the annual fall potluck. Co-hostesses were Virginia Bordwell and Heather Heddens. There were 17 members in attendance, in addition to one guest. Members received their 2014-15 program books, prepared by Millie Youngquist.

The Washington, Iowa Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) met at the home of Karen Murphy on Tuesday, Aug. 19, at 6:30 p.m. for the annual fall potluck. Co-hostesses were Virginia Bordwell and Heather Heddens. There were 17 members in attendance, in addition to one guest. Members received their 2014-15 program books, prepared by Millie Youngquist.
Highlights of the business meeting included a discussion concerning AAUW?s commitment and role in the Oct. 14 Domestic Violence workshop to be held at the library. Also, members were reminded of the date change of their sponsored National Honor Society Reception for the students and their parents. The fall date this year will be Nov. 18, 2014, and the event will once again take place at the United Presbyterian Church.
Thank-you notes and cards were shared from Chad Dillon, WCSD Assure Center teacher, and his students for providing them with several interesting speakers last spring. Cards were also received from one of the scholarship recipients and from the two Camp Invention scholarship students.
President Marde McConnell thanked Ellen Krueger and Jan Stiles for the very informative AAUW display in the Curves window for the 175th Celebration. Member Millie Youngquist?s huge role as co-chair of the very successful, weeklong event was acknowledged by all. Julia Gamon shared that the construction of the ?Little Free Library? is complete. Marde McConnell will paint and stain the library, and Virginia Bordwell will take care of its registration. In closing, members Karen Murphy and Mary Wagamon volunteered to select a memorial book in the name of charter member, Joy Batterson.
The next meeting will be held at the Washington High School Media Center on Sept. 16, at 7 p.m., and will include a presentation by Joan Hippen and others about the current high school 1:1 computer program. Co-hostesses for the September meeting are Patty Roe, Mary Wagamon and Gerry Schmidt.
