May. 22, 2019 3:00 pm
The May meeting of the American Legion Aux Leon Beatty Post No. 29 met on Tuesday, May 14, at the Washington County Ambulance Center. President Sue Gilmere called the meeting to order at 7 p.m. The opening prayer was given by Dixie Young. The Pledge of Allegiance and reading of the Preamble of God and Country was recited by all.
Due to no meeting in April, the March minutes were read and approved. The treasurer report was given, with no bills to be paid. A motion was made and approved the report.
The legion has a total of 54 members, 89 percent paid, a report of three members deceased. The motion was made to approve the report.
It was reported that all four girls are now registered to attend Girls State. Cards were signed by the unit to be sent to each of them while they are there.
Sue Gilmere reported that she had recently attended the District Meeting that was held on April 6, at the Veterans Hall in Mt. Pleasant. Attendance was low, silent auction was held, reported that Annie Blanchard had passed away in April. School of Instruction will be held Aug. 10, in Winfield, and the spring conference will be held in Swisher.
Sue also reported that she had recently spoken to the Washington Evening Journal about the Aux news not getting into the paper.
It was noted that the Air Show will be held in June at the Washington Airport and the May car show was canceled due to bad weather. Remaining shows are scheduled for June, July and August.
There was some discussion concerning whether the unit should continue holding monthly meetings or go to maybe having them quarterly due to the lack of attendance. They are encouraging any women who have a veteran in their family to attend. The auxiliary will be taking the summer months off and will resume in September.
National Poppy Day is May 24. It was stated in 1996 that poppies are the symbol of patriotism. Dixie Young is in charge of the disbursement of the poppies and sent a signup sheet around for the unit to sign when willing to help with this event. Anyone interested in helping should contact her. Disbursement days will be May 17, 18, 23 and 24. She has ordered 60 plus 25 large ones for Crawfordsville.
The closing prayer was given by Dixie Young.
