Apple Daze quilt contest open for registration

DONNELLSON ? Quilters of all skill levels are invited to enter the free Apple Daze quilt contest, which will be on display Sept. 17 in Donnellson as part of an ongoing citywide celebration.

The contest has three age categories: junior, age 14 and younger; intermediate, ages 15-20; and adult, age 21 and older.

In the adult division, quilt blocks will be judged in three categories: most creative; best workmanship; and best use of color. Cash prizes of $20, $15 and $10 will be handed out for first, second and third place, respectively, along with ribbons.

In the intermediate and junior divisions, blocks will be judged on creativity and best use of color. Ribbons and cash prizes of $15 and $10 will be given for first and second place in both divisions.

A ?Best of Show? ribbon and $25 will be awarded to the overall winner.

To enter the contest, send a self-addressed stamped envelope with a request for the contest fabric to: Dee Beck, 205 Park St., Donnellson IA 52625.

Participants will then use the fabric in conjunction with cotton fabric to create an individual quilt block. All finished blocks should measure 12.5 inches and be made of cotton fabric or cotton blend. All entries should include the name of the block, why the design was chosen, and the name and address of the competitor. Additionally, all participants should write or embroider their initials in the lower right-hand corner of the quilt blocks, at least one inch from the edges.

Participants may enter more than one block.

Deadline for entry is Sept. 1. Mail or bring entry blocks to Beck. All blocks entered in the contest become property of Donnellson Apple Daze.
